Understanding Daily Vedic Panchang & Muhurat
Ancient wisdom for aligning daily actions with cosmic rhythms
What are the 5 Limbs of Panchang?
The word Panchang derives from Sanskrit Pancha (Five) and Anga (Limbs). It measures cosmic time based on the positions of the Sun and Moon:
- Tithi (Lunar Day): Calculated by the 12° angular distance between Moon and Sun.
- Nakshatra (Lunar Mansion): The 27 stellar constellations through which the Moon travels.
- Yoga (Solar-Lunar Angular Sum): 27 subtle energy periods influencing health and prosperity.
- Karana (Half Tithi): 6° movement of the Moon, indicating favorable actions.
- Vaar (Solar Day): Day of the week ruled by a specific planetary deity.
Shubh Muhurat vs. Ashubh Muhurat
Abhijit Muhurat is the most auspicious 48-minute period of the day centered on local solar noon. It is believed to destroy all negative influences and ensure success in endeavors.
Rahu Kalam is a 90-minute daily period ruled by the shadow planet Rahu. Vedic tradition advises avoiding major transactions, travel, marriage ceremonies, or starting new ventures during Rahu Kalam.
These dynamic time divisions are used in Vedic astrology to determine optimal hours for business, travel, and spiritual practices throughout the day and night.
